Don Binney (1940- 2012) is recognised as one of the great New Zealand artists, and regarded among the top half dozen most collectible names in New Zealand art with a career spanning over 40 years. His iconic paintings and drawings of birds and landforms are inspired by his commitment to ornithology and environmental issues.
Binney attended Elam Art School at Auckland University graduating in 1961. He was later to become Senior lecturer in painting at Elam with a 24 year teaching career.
In 1967 he was the recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council travel fellowship. As part of that travel he spent time living in Mexico.
Binney spent time living in London, Australia and Mexico.

Provenance: Purchased in an auction held at COCA to raise funds for Christchurch Cathedral in 2009. This work is from a series inspired by his time in Calixtiahuaca Mexico.
