Polixeni Papapetrou (1960 -2018) was an internationally recognised Australian photographer. Her parents immigrated to Australia from Greece and she grew up in the large Greek community in Melbourne. In 1984 she graduated from the University of Melbourne with a degree in Law and the arts. She continued to study then began a career as a commercial lawyer.
Papapetrou began taking photographs as in 1987. Her work centred around different themed photograph series that questioned people’s identities in the context of their culture. Her different series included Elvis Presley fans and impersonators, Marilyn Munroe impersonators, builders, circus performers and children. She used her daughter as a model in many images.
