Second Stage of Cruelty – William Hogarth

$425.00

William Hogarth (1697-1764)

Hogarth was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. Influenced by French and Italian painting and engraving, Hogarth’s works are mostly satirical caricatures. They became widely popular and mass-produced via prints in his lifetime, and he was by far the most significant English artist of his generation.

This work is from Hogarths series – The Four Stages of Cruelty – Hogarth’s outcry against inhumanity. The prints were intended as a form of moral instruction; Hogarth was dismayed by the routine acts of cruelty he witnessed on the streets of London.
